Which Moon Phase Are You?

The Moon Phase that you were born under says a great deal about the dynamic of your life, the general energetic direction with which you approach things and the script that you are working with. Although seemingly a small thing, it often represents a thread which can permeate your entire life, and is often backed up by other aspects and themes in the natal chart.

Waxing Moon Phase: NEW MOON: EMERGENCE

People born exactly at a New Moon, or with the Moon less than 45° ahead of the Sun have an instinctive, youthful and subjective approach to life. They are often energetic and impulsive and are good at coming up with new ideas, because they are able to envision their ideas in the future. They are usually enthusiastic about becoming submerged in new experiences. This phase is associated with The Sun & Leo

Waxing Moon Phase: CRESCENT MOON: EXPANSION

People born with the Moon from 45° to 90° ahead of the Sun have a natural impulse towards action, challenging old structures in a struggle to develop faith in themselves. There is a sense of the need to overcome obstacles with this phase, or of struggling to emerge from past dependencies, or habits which may seem to have a hold on them. This phase is associated with The Moon & Cancer

Waxing Moon: FIRST QUARTER MOON: ACTION

People born with the Moon from 90° to 135° ahead of the Sun are often forceful, constructive and motivated, spending their energy laying the foundations of the future. Active and strongly orientated towards building new ideals, they will be found tearing down old structures to make way for the new. This phase is associated with Jupiter & Sagittarius.

Waxing Moon Phase: GIBBOUS MOON: OVERCOMING

People born with the Moon 135° to 180° ahead of the Sun find themselves with a need to clarify their personal goals and the desire to contribute something of value to society. They are reflective and analytical, always trying to find a better way for themselves to integrate with others. They have a strong desire to understand everything about the world around them, the connections that they cannot see. This phase is associated with Saturn & Capricorn.

Waning Moon Phase: FULL MOON: FULFILLMENT

People born with the Moon 180° to 135° behind the Sun may need to learn to think before they act, in order to see the meaning of their actions and how their relationships are affected by them. They often have a clear and objective vision of reality and strive to find fulfillment of some kind. The opposition can indicate the culmination of or the breaking away from past relationships, suggesting the ability to make new beginnings based on a conscious awareness of their identity. This phase is associated with Mercury, Gemini & Virgo.

Waning Moon Phase: DISSEMINATING MOON: DEMONSTRATION

Those born with the Moon 135° to 90° behind the Sun have a desire to transmit to others what they have learnt through study or experience. They are often the ‘disseminator’ of ideas, living out and sharing with others what they have found to be useful to them. They are passing on what they have found to be of value and are natural born teachers. This phase is associated with Venus, Taurus & Libra.

Waning Moon: LAST QUARTER MOON: RE-ORIENTATION

Those born with the Moon 90° to 45° behind the Sun may find themselves in a life where they have to go through challenging psychological re-orientations in order to help their old patterns of behavior change and evolve. There may be a crisis in consciousness, where they are forced to embody their ideological beliefs into a definite system of thought. The scale of their efforts may only be appreciated years later, for they are often pioneers. Their difficult challenges can cause them to develop a strong sense of irony or humor. Uranus & Aquarius are associated with this phase.

Waning Moon:BALSAMIC MOON: RELEASE

Those born with the Moon less than 45° behind the Sun are in a stage of transition. They may find themselves living out new concepts within old structures, with a commitment to a vision of the future. In some way, the past is being shed and the future foreshadowed as the new Moon draws near. These people can be fanatical, but also visionary, working for the greater good, and can help society orientate toward a better future. They may even sacrifice themselves willingly towards this end. Mars & Scorpio are associated with this phase.

The great astrologer Dane Rudhyar writes poetically about the phases of the moon in his classic text “The Lunation Cycle”

‘The cycle begins at the new moon, when the moon is lost in the brilliancy of the sun. A day or so later, the thin crescent of the moon appears in the western sky after sunset. At ‘first quarter’ the moon is half-full and elevated at the zenith while the sun sets. The zodiacal distance between the two Lights keeps increasing as the moon also increases in roundness and in light; until moon-rise in the east coincides with sunset in the west. The rays of the setting sun run alongside the surface of the earth to become reflected in the lunar mirror.
Because she is completely distant, yet face to face with the sun, the moon has become truly the equal of the sun. She can release the fullness of the sun through the night to earth-creatures who can now receive the solar ‘seed-idea’ in its completeness.
Then, as if because of her gift to the earth, the Moon, gradually de-possessed of her light, seems to slow her motion in order to draw closer to the sun, yearning for his radiance. At the ‘last quarter’ phase, she is seen at the zenith while the sun rises. Ever stronger, the pull toward the sun compels her to rise later and later in the night until, about three days before the cycle’s end she rises as dawn already begins to colour the eastern sky. The following days she is seen no longer, lost as she is in the exalted light of the sun. She communes with the sun, to be filled once more with the potency of light – that she might be able again to make of it a gift to earth-creatures.

  1. I’ve been simultaneously plagued/blessed by my being born within the same hour as the New Moon. Full of ideas (that I rarely see to fruition) I act as a catalyst (for other people to benefit from), I struggle to settle to anything (because everything is interesting!). I don’t mind really I suppose.

When I had my natal chart drawn up for the first time, I remember the astrologer mentioned that being born at the time of the New Moon meant that if one felt physically unwell, broken, damaged etc then it impacted considerably upon one’s spiritual/mental/emotional well being too. Any thoughts on that? I know that I take episodes of ‘flu’ etc really personally!

    Still loving this blog btw!

    1. Thank you for your comment Corrina: Wiliam Lilly states that if the Sun & Moon are in conjunction or in opposition that there may be an affliction to one of the eyes, or a blemish nearby, especially if they are near angles, or there is also an affliction from Mars. Vitality may also be rather dependent on Mood, when the Sun & Moon are in conjunction.
