Sign: Libra | Sign Ruler: Venus | Decan Ruler: Saturn Element: Air | Mode: Cardinal
Venus rules Libra by domicile, while Saturn rules this decan by face. Saturn is exalted in Libra, making this one of the strongest Saturnian regions of the zodiac. Here Saturn’s qualities of discipline, patience, stability, and order are refined and elevated through Venus’s concern for harmony and proportion. The result is a face associated with quiet prosperity, restraint, and enduring well-being. Core Principle: Prosperity through restraint.
Liber Hermetis
“The second decan of Libra has the face of Saturn. Its name is Chusthnis. It causes affliction, adhesion and strangury. In the figure, however, it is a certain man, standing over a marsh, leaving off into one with feet joined; completely girded from the breasts all the way to the hollows of the feet in variegated linen, having his head shaven leaving one spot where there is hair.”
Picatrix-Ibn Ezra
“In the second face of Libra ascends a black man with a fiancée and a joyful path ahead. This is the face of quietude, rejoicing, abundance, and good life. This is its form.”
The second territory of Libra offers a new, hard-won steadiness, where the ground beneath has been fully tested and has proved stable. Here, as Saturn arrives in Venus’s sign of proportion and relationship, he finds himself unusually and significantly, exalted; raised into a condition where his natural qualities of restraint, endurance and patience have the authority to create lasting balance. It is here that grief which threatened to swallow everything can find the boundaries sufficient to contain it.
The ancient figure who presides here stands motionless above the unstable ground, feet joined, body enclosed in variegated linen, his head shorn to a single remaining tuft. The marsh of grief is not drained, but the austere figure has a form sufficiently defined to maintain its position above what would otherwise engulf it. The variegated linen carries Venus’s beauty within Saturn’s restraint, an ornament refined by discipline, an affirmation that what is preserved through measure retains its value and colour, while what is merely indulged dissipates into the unstable ground below.
The Golden Dawn assigns this decan to The Three of Swords, traditionally entitled Sorrow, at odds with the words of Ibn Ezra, who records a face of quietude, rejoicing, abundance and the good life. It is Saturn’s exaltation in Libra which reveals that to endure, everything requires limitation and commitment, which closes the door on other possibilities. Preservation requires restraint and stability can only be established by accepting that not everything can be retained, revealing that concealed within every enduring choice is a lasting order, created through relinquishment and bearing the sorrow inherent in all necessary limitations.
The shadow of this decan is the stagnation that develops when restraint hardens into withholding, and stability, in its determination to preserve what remains, closes against change. Chusthnis with his joined feet is an image of what the Saturnian principle becomes when it exceeds its own wisdom, and the afflictions attributed to this face, constriction, obstruction, impeded flow, are the body’s own testimony to what happens when measures intended to preserve abundance, prevent it from moving at all. What we can discover, is that freedom in not necessarily an endless field of possibilities; we must decide what will be carried forward and, inevitably, what must be left behind.
The Benefactor reveals one of grief’s more difficult paradoxes: sorrow and peace can coexist. Healing asks that sorrow be given a durable place within a life large enough to contain it. Here Saturn’s restriction becomes a blessing, for what cannot be changed is accepted, what remains valuable is protected, and what is sufficient is recognised as enough. Peace emerges not because sorrow has ended, but because sorrow no longer needs to occupy everything.
