“Most people talk about fear of the unknown, but if there is anything to fear, it is the known.” Deepak Chopra

“The silver thread of the waxing and waning moon can guide you subtly through the ebb and flow of life’s tides. Attuning yourself with the phases of the moon, especially as they aspect your natal chart, can provide a beautiful living meditation that can permeate your life with lunar harmony.” ©JKG
The New Moon in Aquarius on January 24th 2020 brings images of departure to the fore; departure from all types of relationships that do not serve the heart.
Ripening in six months, with the Full Moon in Aquarius on August 3rd, this cycle speaks of independence, the freedom to choose your own way, to detach yourself from the heard, step out of line with anything that no longer resonates, and to head fearlessly into a new way of being.

This decan is associated with the tarot card of The Five of Swords, and I have shown an example here from The Alchemical Tarot by Robert Place. We see here, a man forging a new blade from a damaged sword, suggesting that “reinvention” is not a defeat, but rather a transformation of the original material for a different purpose. The damaged sword will still have “known” damage, but in its new incarnation it will be as youthful, as fresh and as sharp the day it was first forged.
Five is a number associated with the discomfort of change, of moving beyond what is secure and known, and perhaps by now “stale”. With the suit of swords, it is all about ideas and mental activity, with the understanding that our thoughts create our reality.
This New Moon can inspire us with the impetus to change things up, and give up, end or even destroy, any associations that we may have, that we are yearning to get rid of. This desire comes from a deep rooted longing for independence of thought, of freedom from constraint and a soulful desire to follow the rhythm of our own individuality.

“NEW MOON– I am the power of the bursting seed, dancing in the beckoning void, ripe with limitless potentials. A kaleidoscope of outcomes seduces, invites and tempts you, but be still in the darkness of the Moon. Sense the power of her black womb, and wait. Trust that in the stillness that I, the right “seed” for now, will find you, a vision for your soul to nurture” © JKG
The Astrologers Diary
The New Moon every month offers an opportunity to sow new seeds, and as an Astrologer, I find it to be a useful exercise for myself and in working with others, to use the energy of each particular New Moon, according to the Sabian Symbol that it falls on, together with the position in which it falls in the Natal Chart. Such considerations can be invaluable in steering through ups and downs, and in becoming “easy” with the ebb and flow of what life brings.
This particular New Moon falls in the 5th degree of Aquarius , which Dane Rudhyar describes as follows:
PHASE 305 (AQUARIUS 5°): A COUNCIL OF ANCESTORS IS SEEN IMPLEMENTING THE EFFORTS OF A YOUNG LEADER.
KEYNOTE: The Root foundation of past performances which power and sustain whatever decision is made in a crisis by an individual.
This particular New Moon falls in my own 8th house, a place in the horoscope which contains secrets, mysteries and taboo’s, and which is the key to transformation on all levels. It is the house associated with the sign of Scorpio, and governs issues such as death, sex, inheritance and taxes… it is where we share with others on a deep and intimate level. After having recently completed a 10 fast, (yes…. 10 days!!) which started on the last Full Moon, I feel suitably cleansed, and energised enough to take on this, the first New Moon of 2020. As usual, I have a full calendar already, with some brand new courses rapidly approaching, that I will be excited to embark upon.
The Sabian Symbol above, reminds me that my yearning to grow and my enthusiasm for new ways of doing things remains as fresh as ever… but as I mature, I also have my accumulated knowledge to draw on, a calm “base note” for the sparkly and energizing “top notes” that I am looking forward to discovering during the year.
For any intentions that anyone may have at this time, this particular New Moon brings the courage to step away from what is known, if the relationship with it has become destructive and tarnished, and to go in search of new vistas, a different way and some brand new horizons.
A Blessed New Moon to you all, and may the Goddess watch over you. ❤
Knowing which house the New Moon falls in, and whether it is in close aspect with any planets in your chart can be an invaluable tool, along with the wider cycle of the Progressed Moon, for discovering the secret rhythms of your daily life.

My name is Joanna Grant, I am an Astrologer, Tarot Reader and Writer, who lives for now in the South West of Ireland. Through my life, I have watched as Jupiter has brought me the desires of my deepest longings, and also suffered as Pluto has torn my life into shreds, and eaten the remains. I have answered the calls of Saturn, as he has brought me to new lands, hardship, and also to deep learning, and have also witnessed that he has never left my side. Uranus has ensured that I have not stayed in any one location for very long, whilst Mars & Venus have led me by the nose on far more occasions than I care to recall, but who have also brought their passionate
creative spirit to the fore in my life. Neptune has beguiled and confused me, but also entranced and inspired, whilst Mercury has made certain that I have studied the reasons “why” for everything to the “nth” degree. The Moon, my eternal guide on this journey and the lady of my own chart, has given me my deep love of The Stars, steering me ever onwards along the path to seek The Sun.
At this stage in my life, it is time to give back….. and my long knowledge of Astrology leads and informs my practice in offering guidance and empowerment, helping others to lead a more authentic, productive and magical life. You can read more about me here.
